Dielectric

A poor conductor of electricity that is optimised for a useful purpose in an electric or electronic device. A dielectric acting as an insulator may need low dielectric constant but one acting as a transistor gate or used between the electrodes of a capacitor may need a high dielectric constant. Other properties such as thickness, flexibility and breakdown strength must also be optimised depending on application.
